Dryopteris intermedia grows in quality mesic forests. It is similar to Spinulose Wood Fern, but Florist's Fern has the innermost pinnule on the lowermost pinna shorter than to equaling the pinnule next to it. I also find that Dryopteris intermedia has a slightly more lacy look to it than does D. carthusiana.
I agree, Scott. D. intermedia also tends to be darker green.
