Red-berried Elder
Growing in rich, deeply shaded forests
, Sambucus pubens
is much less common than the related Common Elderberry (
S. canadensis
). This one was photographed in rural LaPorte County, Indiana. The crushed foliage of this shrub smells pretty bad!
