Plant Quiz Answer - Gentiana saponaria

This species of gentian is found in sandy moist prairies and in black oak savannas in the Chicago Region. The photos of this plant were taken in September 2007 in a savanna in NW Indiana.

I finally saw this gentian in the field yesterday in northern Indiana. It's considered extirpated in Michigan (historic collection near Niles), but there is an apparent specimen at the Morton Arboretum attributed to Berrien County, collected on August 30, 1992. As many of the plants in Indiana were still in bud yesterday (9/20), I am skeptical the Michigan collection is legitimate.
