Sarracenia purpurea L.

I found this while rooting around in my desk recently. Apparently the people of Canada really love their Pitcher Plants!

You can even buy a modern gold piece with Sarracenia purpurea on it: http://www.talismancoins.com/servlet/Detail?no=804

The finest photograph I have ever seen of this plant was created by Lee Casebere of the Indiana DNR. It is a work of art, and it was done before the ease of digital photography came along.

  1. Hey Keith. That is an awesome penny! Where did you get it? I found some for sale on-line and might just buy one. Thanks for posting it.

  2. I just bought two of the gold pieces. Anybody want one?

  3. As a wee lad I collected any coins that were unusual. Never bought them - just got them in change.

  4. It is possible that Sarracenia traps and kills black flies. This could be why the Canadians love it so much!

  5. Sure, Justin. 5...thousand would work.

Keith, did you remember that you had the coin, or was it a surprise when you found it? I'm jealous... that's really cool. I'll trade you for it... I'll give you one of equal face value with Abraham Lincoln on it.

  6. I'm actually going to buy some of these pennies (not the golden ones; I have a golden goose for such things). I can get them for $1 each. I'll buy extra in case anyone wants one.

You are probably thinking "eh". But wait until you hear my idea: The pennies are the exact diameter of a B&L Hasting 10X handlens. That's right, I'm going to superglue one right on my handlens. Crazy....... or Genius?

  7. I knew I had it but forgot about it over the decades. It was a rediscovery, I guess.
As far as a trade, I may have more, so I'll just give you one, Scott, as long as you will agree to:
    1. Type my herbarium labels,
    2. Grade my school papers, and
    3. Wash my car once a week.
Let me know if that sounds reasonable.

  8. Because washing your car once a week is against my environmental ethic, I will have to pass...
